  2.                          F-PROT introduction
  3.  
  4. The F-PROT anti-virus package consists of several files, which are:
  5.  
  6.         F-PROT.EXE    the main program
  7.         SIGN.DEF      virus search strings
  8.         *.TX0         language files for various languages
  9.  
  10.     (the files above are essential, and must be present if
  11.     you are for example running F-PROT from a floppy disk).
  12.  
  13.         VIRSTOP.EXE   the virus-intercepting program.
  14.     VIRSTOP2.EXE  a new (experimental) version.
  15.         VIR-HELP.*    virus information in various languages
  16.         *.TXT         information about viruses and the package
  17.         F-TEST.COM    used to test if VIRSTOP is properly installed
  18.         FILE_ID.DIZ   a BBS description file
  19.         VIRLIST.LIS   a list of the viruses F-PROT detects
  20.         *.ASC         PGP signature files
  21.  
  22.     SETUPFM.EXE   A self-installing version of the F-MACROW
  23.                       Word/Excel virus scanner.

  25. The function of VIRSTOP.EXE is to intercept known viruses - it will
  26. prevent the execution of any program infected with any of the viruses
  27. it recognizes. See VIRSTOP.TXT for a description of this program.

  29. The other program, F-PROT.EXE provides virus scanning, disinfection and
  30. information.  To run it, just give the command
  31.  
  32.                         F-PROT <enter>
  33.  
  34. If F-PROT.EXE is run from a diskette it might appear rather slow, but then
  35. it is safe from being infected by a virus - provided the diskette is write-
  36. protected, of course.
  37.  
  38. F-PROT first performs a self-test, to see if it has been infected with a
  39. virus, and then it loads the search strings into memory.  The next step is
  40. to search for viruses in memory, but this can be disabled with the /NOMEM
  41. command-line switch, if you are absolutely sure no virus is present.

  43. You will then be greeted by a screen which shows the available functions:

  49.                         Quit

  51. As a detailed description of some of the functions is provided in separate
  52. .TXT files, they are only described briefly here.
  53.  
  54. Scan (see SCAN.TXT): Searches for viruses, using a large (and growing) set
  55. of virus search strings.  The user can select where to search, and choose
  56. between three different search modes.
  57.  
  58. Configure (see INSTALL.TXT):  This option very limited configuration of
  59. the program, but is due for a re-design in the near future.
  60.  
  61. Viruses: When this function is selected, a new menu appears with a couple
  62. of virus-related functions.  One is 'Information', which provides information
  63. on viruses - a description of their size, behaviour, origin and other
  64. facts which may be of interest.  The second option allows the user to enter
  65. a search string for a new virus.  This should only be necessary between the
  66. discovery of a totally new virus and the arrival of an updated version of
  67. F-PROT.

  69. Program: Answers to some common questions, such as how to obtain updates
  70. and how to contact the author.  Also an attempt to answer the persistent
  71. question of how many viruses F-PROT will detect.
